Welcome to 2025

Resolutions for the new year. And, what a piñata can teach us about success in challenging times.

My bilingual elementary class celebrated holidays with piñatas. One at a time, the teacher blindfolded us, spun us around, and gave us three chances to hit the piñata while everyone screamed excitedly.

Everyone wanted to be the one to break it open, but no one got close until we worked together to guide the blindfolded stick holders to the piñata.

Someone inevitably tried to lead the stick holder astray by yelling the wrong directions. Those who wanted candy more than glory had to coordinate even more. Eventually, we succeeded.

This new year reminds me of those piñata parties.

We can't see the future clearly; recent crises and disasters have disoriented us. We're inclined to prioritize individual desires over our collective well-being.

Some folks are making a lot of noise.

We'll all be better off if we resolve to seek shared understanding, base our decisions on facts, and work toward mutual success.

May it be so.
